The Manicule

A printer's pointing hand, set right under H-A-N-D, points the way to trivia night.

The idea

The mark is a manicule: the pointing hand that printers set in handbills and that readers drew in book margins to flag something worth remembering. Here it sits directly under the letters H-A-N-D and points across at TRIVIA.

So the name is shown as well as written. A real hand points at the thing people come for, and nothing about it says quiz app or classroom.

The lockup is set like a handbill on a strict grid, with heavy Clarendon capitals over a tall gothic, printed in two inks on cream stock. In the icon, the hand comes in from the edge of the tile and points at a big question mark.

  • A literal hand The fist sits under H-A-N-D, so the word and the picture say the same thing.
  • A pointer Margin fists mark the fact worth remembering. That is what a trivia answer is.
  • A handbill Wood-type letters, two inks and a strict grid, like a poster pinned up at the bar.

Icon

In the icon the hand comes in from the edge of the tile and points at a question mark, so the avatar reads as a question and not as a 'next' button.

At 16 to 32 px the pixel-fitted icon-small file is used automatically. A full-bleed square version and a one-ink version are included in the download.

Misuse

The logo only works when it is used as drawn. Avoid these.
